baby school

At the start of the school year, Colden and I began attending a weekly infant class at a developmental preschool for children with special needs, called Bornhava (a danish word meaning a high-quality early childhood program with a home-like environment). I'm not sure if it's because the staff knows that having a child with special needs is emotionally challenging or not, but everyone at the school offers a general sense of understanding. They've really tried to make it easier on the parents, and it must be working- because Colden and I absolutely LOVE it there. The facility itself is new; but it's not the building that makes this place fantastic- it's truly the love of the teachers and staff working there that make it so special.

The structure of the class is broken up into four sections: free play, gym & music, snack, and circle. The overall focus is on socialization, gross and fine motor development, oral motor skills (in preparation for speech), all things sensory, and plain old fashioned fun. All the babies in the class have Down Syndrome, so it's been a delight to see them get together to play and giggle. There's an added bonus that all the moms get a little giggle in too. Plus, all the information sharing has been lifesaving. No matter where you're from or what you do, there's certainly an instant connection with a fellow mom if your children share a diagnosis.

Colden absolutely loves the music portion of the class. Whether it's singing, beating the tambourines, or tapping the sticks, he gets the biggest grin on his face. I must catch a photo of this for next time; as I think we have a little Mozart on our hands. He also gets a kick out of the big baby swing. Think: seesaw meets car carrier. This giant contraption can seat four sweet babes at once, with two on each end. This is the spot where Colden made his first move. Enter: Genevieve, or Evie as she's affectionately known. And boy does Colden express his affection towards his sweet babyfriend.

A little blurry as we're at mid-swing..

Being a ladies man can be tough at times...

Either sweet Evie just broke his heart, or he's had enough of the lumpy popcorn mat. I'll let you be the judge.

When my parents were in town last month, they had the pleasure of tagging along and attending class with Colden and I. I'm so glad I was able to share our experience at baby school with them. My mom made friends with nearly everyone, and promised to be back very soon.

While all of us were together, the PR/Media person asked us if she could take a few photos of the whole family (minus Matt). Here are my favorites. I'm so happy Colden and I have found a place where we feel like we truly belong.
