babes in toyland

Educational. Non-toxic. Wooden. Developmentally appropriate. Unique. Well designed. Safe. Did I mention wooden?

When thinking about the type of toys I'd stock Colden's playroom with, these adjectives come to mind. Yet somehow entirely without my consent, what has seemingly found it's way into our playroom? Anything and everything PLASTIC.

Don't get me wrong, plastic (and I mean BPA, phthalates, and PVC free plastic) can mean educational. It's just that our stash of 'Made in China' goodies all require batteries, complete with a money back, parental headache guarantee. Naturally, a child born in the twenty-first century is attracted to everything unnatural- the flashing lights, the recorded songs, and the bright shiny surfaces all have Colden going gah gah. Here's his first reaction to the Fisher Price Sing Along Stage. It's utterly obnoxious and totally awesome all at the same time.

I really can't knock this plastic toy because it's been catalyst to a giant leap in Colden's development- as a great sensory motivator for him to pull-to-stand. Plus he babbles to himself in the mirror, constantly. Not to mention seeing mommy in the mirror while I'm sitting behind him blows his mind. I admit, I like it. He loves it. How did this happen??

Never fear, Energizer Mommy is out to win the battle over an all plastic playroom. With well-made toys from brands like Haba, Hape, Plan Toys, Manhattan Toy, and Green Toys in my arsenal, we're taking the attack of the plastics head on. Wooden is the new black. Or at least the new babe in toyland. That sure is a nice looking wooden xylophone, kid.

Mommy: 1. Plastics: 1000. We're on our way!

  1. I hear you on this! Austin's easter basket is packed full of goodies from our local green Granola Babies store. It's hard to eliminate the plastics. At least we're trying! Love your blog by the way.
